CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL APPROVES 3% HOTEL/MOTEL TAX EARMARKED FOR TOURISM; MUST BE APPROVED BY STATE

The City of Crossville would like to get a piece of the hotel/motel tax “pie”. At a special-called meeting Tuesday, Council Member Danny Wyatt proposed a resolution to approve a private act to charge an additional 3 percent hotel/motel tax with expenditures to be designated by the city manager for tourism and economic/community development. Normally the tax is collected by the county to be used for whatever they designate. Wyatt said that he believed the increase would raise the area’s tax base. He further stated that the city manager could recommend the funds go to such areas as the Chamber of Commerce or Parks and Recreation, with the final decision being made by the council. The resolution was approved unanimously at 4-0. Council Member Scot Shanks was absent. City Attorney Will Ridley told the council that In order for the state to amend the city charter through a private act, the resolution, which needs 2 readings, would have to be approved by Feb. 1st. The council set a special-called meeting for the second and final reading for Thursday, January 25 at 12 Noon.
