CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL APPROVES MOTION TO POSSIBLY ADD MEMBERS

The question of adding members to the Crossville City Council came up for discussion at the group’s Tuesday night meeting. Council Member Pamela Harris made a motion for a resolution to modify the city charter to allow for a city council to consist of 6 members and mayor and be sent to the General Assembly by representatives and on approval, be added to the 2018 election. Council Member Danny Wyatt asked if there was time for such a move. City Attorney Will Ridley said that the deadline to present such a matter to legislators would be February 15. Wyatt said he did not see the necessity of such a move, and that “more ducks would just muddy-up the pond.” Harris said that the addition of members would create a different dynamic. She said that people look at past instances where it appeared council members banded together in voting against other members. Council Member JH Graham stated that he had missed the initial discussion of the issue at the last work session due to being sick and that he had not had time to discuss it with anyone. He asked that the subject be tabled until he could do such. The motion was voted for and passed on a 3-2 vote with Wyatt and Graham voting against. Ridley reminded the group that when the resolution is returned to the council, a 3/4 vote from the council will be required for it to pass.
