CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERS ADDING TRAFFIC SLOWING MEASURES ON DEERFIELD RD

The Crossville City Council will consider implementing measures to slow traffic on Deerfield Rd for the agenda at next week’s Council meeting. The consideration comes after residents in the area pleaded with the council last month, believing that the number of speeding vehicles coming down the road was likely to cause accidents or fatalities.

These measures will include reducing the speed limit from 30 MPH to 25 MPH, adding a crosswalk near Forest Fun Habitat Trail with rumble strips, and adding more speed limit signs.

Road Superitendant Kevin “We set the cameras out for a week. The peak times are 2:30 to 4:30, and there’s an average of 1,200 vehicles going through a day. There’s a couple of days where it went over 1,300.”

Councilman Scot Shanks said, “Give us an example of traffic counts on other roads you have done.”

Music replied, “We’ve done one on Holiday at the same time, it was averaging 600 to 1,000 depending on the day.”

Shanks asked Music if he would consider the number of vehicles going through Deerfield to be a high count, to which Music responded ‘yes.’

“Especially for a neighborhood. It wasn’t designed for that,” said Shanks. Shanks also said that even at 600, it would still be considered heavy traffic.

Police Chief Jessie Brooks had been in the area, setting up police cars and trailers and traffic counts.

“We’ve written less than ten citations, but the average speed going through there is around 46 MPH,” said Chief Brooks.

City Manager Valerie Hale said the new measures will be in place until the bridge at Sparta Highway is finished, whereupon the road’s activity will be monitored again.

“We have a feeling it might not change dramatically, just because people have discovered that area as kind of a shortcut to go through that subdivision.”

Further traffic calming measures may be considered as well.
