CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSES NEW GARRISON PARK & PART-TIME FRAUD EXAMINER POSITION AT WORK SESSION

The Crossville City Council discussed several items to be placed on the agenda of their January meeting at a work session Thursday night. The Cumberland County Health Dept. and Community Health Office have proposed to offer the city $40,000 to help defray costs of playground equipment at the new Garrison Park in exchange for deeming the park “smoke free.” The money is part of tobacco settlement funds awarded to the state. The council has accepted such help in the past at Centennial Park and the amphitheater. The Crossville Police Dept. has requested a part-time position for a fraud-examiner. Chief David Beaty told the council that the department has several credit card fraud and scam cases that take up a lot of time. He said they could be addressed by the part-time position and that a candidate for the job is being looked-at. Council members also talked about the possibility of changing the city charter to include a total of 7 members on the council. City Mayor James Mayberry and Council Member Pamela Harris commented that they liked the idea and that it would add an opportunity for more citizens to be represented. City Attorney Will Ridley said that the resolution would have to be presented to the legislature, then returned to council to be placed on a referendum. The council will hold their monthly meeting Tuesday, Jan. 9.
