CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSES ROAD CLOSURES FOR EVENTS

During their work session yesterday, the Crossville City Council entertained three different road closure requests for proposed events.

The first was from the Crossville Cruisers for the car shows held several times a year on Main Street in front of the old courthouse downtown. City Councilman Scot Shanks asked why the car shows are not being held at the community complex instead of on Main Street. The cruise-in organizers told Shanks they spoke with downtown businesses who were supportive of their events being on Main Street. However, a recent city inquiry showed some of the businesses were not in favor of it. City Manager Greg Wood told the council at the meeting the number of street closings is adding up when it comes to overtime pay for police and the street department. One idea mentions is to utilize the bypass for traffic that is going through Crossville on Main Street instead of going direct to the event to cut down on the traffic congestion.

The second road closure request is for the popular Friday at the Crossroads.

The third request is for the 19th Amendment Centennial Celebration Parade. The Plateau Women’s Chorus is seeking permission to sponsor a short traditional parade and ceremony to celebrate the centennial of the passing of the 19th Amendment and Tennessee’s historic role. On Saturday, April 4, 2020, the group wishes to gather approximately 10 to 20 community groups at Veterans Park, walk a short route, and finish at Veterans Park with a ceremony, speech, and music. The Plateau Women’s Chorus is a non-profit 501 ©3 organization duly chartered with Tennessee. The organization says is neither a political event or a fundraiser but rather to celebrate women’s right to vote and those that made it possible.

The city council decided to send all three requests to their regular scheduled meeting agenda for a vote on January 14, 2020.
