Crossville police responded to the area of Hunter Drive and Cook Road Friday, May 19, 2017 to a report of a child walking in the road. Officers arrived to find several people with the boy who appeared to be a couple of years old wearing a shirt, sweatpants and no socks or shoes. One witness told police he saw the child chasing a dog in the area of Cook Road almost crossing the road. Officers started to search the area asking residents if anyone knew the identity of the child. Officers had the boy for over 30 minutes until a man approached them stating he had been watching the child and just then noticed he was missing. Officers say the man, 35-year-old Jeromy Dale Babel of Crossville, said he was a relative of the boy. Officers say Babel was under the influence of alcohol at the time. Officers arrested Babel and transported him to the Cumberland County jail. The child was released into the custody of his family. The Department of Children’s Services was notified of the incident.
