CROSSVILLE MAN CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED DOMESTIC ASSAULT, FALSE IMPRISONMENT, UNDERAGE DRINKING

Saturday afternoon, Crossville city units were summoned to an address on Webb Avenue for a report of a domestic disturbance involving weaponry. An 18-year-old woman had locked herself in a bedroom because 20-year-old Hutson Sawyer Smith was threatening to kill her. She said Smith had gone to his car and had a handgun and a rifle.

When police arrived, a man spoke to them but refused to open the door. He eventually did open the door and was taken into custody. Smith had red, watery eyes and smelled of alcohol. When he was placed into a patrol car, he began to kick or beat on the vehicle’s door.

The woman was found in a back bedroom; officers found a .22 caliber rifle under the bed. She said she and Smith had been in an argument earlier in the day, and that Smith had taken her phone. After she got it back, she left the apartment and then returned later to find Smith packing his things. She said she saw a handgun lying on the bed.

The woman said when she called 911, Smith told her he would kill her and she’d be dead before the police got there.

She described Smith’s weapons and his vehicle; the vehicle was located and officers obtained a search warrant for weapons, ammunition and firearms attachments inside the vehicle.

All the weapons described by the woman were located in the vehicle.

According to the arrest report, “Smith stated he at no time had a firearm on his person, but the physical evidence matched the series of events [the woman] had described.”

Smith was charged with underage consumption, false imprisonment and aggravated domestic assault. Police seized a New England Firearms .22 caliber rifle, a Walther P22 .22 caliber pistol, a Walther P22 pistol magazine and ten .22 caliber rounds.
