CROSSVILLE MAN CLAIMS TO BE VICTIM OF BLACKMAIL AFTER ESCORT SCAM
On Sunday, Officer Jessie Henson received a name and number from dispatch about someone getting blackmailed. The officer made contact with the man, who said that he was involved in a prostitution ring and was being blackmailed for money. He told the officer that he was on a Cookeville website and saw an ad for a female escort.
He filled out all information to get the escort for the night and said he had to pay $200 for 1 hour worth of service prior to arrival. He agreed to the payment and paid using a gift card.
While he continued to speak to someone from the website, they told him that he would have to pay an additional $500 for insurance coverage. He agreed and again paid with another gift card.
Along with the money he spent, he also sent three explicit photos of himself.
Prior to making contact with the officer, the man realized that the escort service was a scam. He said that he was messaging a person on WhatsApp and advised her that he was not going to send any more money. This is when he began to receive multiple phone calls and messages telling him that if he did not continue to send money they would expose his photos to the internet and his social media accounts.
The victim was advised not to send any money to anyone, make new social media accounts, and change his phone number.
