CUMBERLAND COUNTY BOE TO CREATE 5-10 YEAR PLAN TO INCLUDE CCHS AUDITORIUM

For several years, Cumberland County High School has been without an auditorium. But should the building of such a facility take precedence over other needs at the school? Members of the Board of Education have asked themselves this question for some time now and Thursday night, Board Member Tom Netherton made a motion to move forward in providing an auditorium at the school. Discussion then centered around the “needs” of CCHS as opposed to the “wants”. Principal Jon Hall told the group that although he would love to see the auditorium, there were other things, such as bathroom repairs and upgrades to the ballfield and stadium that need attention. The Board weighed the cost of an auditorium, about $6-$7 million against the cost of a new school at Crab Orchard which is also on the plate to be approved by the county commission. At a recent meeting of the Budget Committee, commissioners requested that the school board create a 5-10 year action plan before any new funding is approved. A motion was made to create such a plan with a 4-2 vote with one abstention. The Board will hold a work session to create such a plan on March 28 from 6:30-8:30 PM.
