CUMBERLAND COUNTY COMMISSION APPROVES RURAL BROADBAND RESOLUTION
The Cumberland County Commission has joined other lawmakers in the state to push citizen access to quality broadband internet services. In his State of the State address earlier this year, Gov. Bill Haslam stated that he would push for such legislation, particularly in rural areas of the state so that every student could have better access to the internet. Tuesday night, commissioners unanimously passed a resolution to urge the passage of the Tennessee Broadband Accessibility Act by the state General Assembly. The bill proposes to provide grants and tax credits to encourage deployment of broadband to unserved areas. It also authorizes the state’s private, non-profit electric cooperatives to provide broadband in their territories.
