CUMBERLAND COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

The Cumberland County Commission meeting, held with all members present except Commissioner Baldwin, began with special recognitions, including Dr. Warner, CCHS principal, announcing Commissioner Nancy Hyder as the winner of the CCHS Hall of Fame.
The Commission unanimously passed Resolution 09-2025-21, opposing the City of Crossville’s plan to create a separate municipal EMS service, citing concerns over increased costs, fragmented coverage, slower response times, higher property taxes, and loss of nonemergency transport services. The resolution highlighted the county’s award-winning EMS, with four ambulances stationed in or near Crossville and an average response time of just over seven minutes. The Commission urged city leaders to discuss any changes with the county to avoid compromising public safety.
Other resolutions included appointing members to the Audit Committee (unanimous), Ethics Committee (unanimous), and Financial Management Committee (17-0), while Resolution 09-2025-4 to increase the Mineral Severance Tax failed again (8-8-1). Resolution 09-2025-5, allowing a $12.50 court charge for public safety support, passed 17-0. Routine budget amendments (Resolutions 09-2025-6 to 09-2025-20) and an MOU for mental health services (Resolution 09-2025-22) were also approved.
Financially, the Codes Department issued various permits, collecting $41,731, while EMS collections were $360,485, below the estimated $433,333. Sales tax collections exceeded estimates at $1,504,002, but property taxes were at 0%, and hotel/motel tax collections were slightly down year-to-date compared to last year.
