CUMBERLAND COUNTY FINANCIAL UPDATE
According to Cumberland County Mayor Allen Foster’s website, in May 2026, Cumberland County experienced growth in several key revenue and development sectors, though some areas lagged behind previous years. The Codes Department issued 35 residential, 2 commercial, 46 general mechanical, and 43 general plumbing permits, bringing in $46,455 in fees—a significant increase from the $31,663 collected during the same month last year. Meanwhile, local tax revenues showed strong performance.
May’s sales tax collections (reflecting March sales) reached $1,531,858, exceeding monthly estimates by $80,246 and pushing the year-to-date total $603,142 ahead of projections. Property tax collections were also robust, hitting 100.24% compared to 98.68% at this point last year. Additionally, prisoner boarding payments for state inmates saw a massive boost, reaching $567,645 year-to-date compared to last year’s $361,825, easily surpassing the annual budgeted amount of $397,823.
Conversely, some departments faced minor financial deficits. The EMS service collected $433,168 for the month, falling just short of its $433,333 monthly target and leaving the service down $465,826 year-to-date. Tourism revenue also experienced a slight dip; hotel/motel tax collections stand at $959,006 year-to-date, which is down from last year’s $977,595 and represents 79.92% of the $1,200,000 annual budget.
