CUMBERLAND COUNTY RAISES $25,000 IN 16 DAYS FOR LARRY V. SHERRILL CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP

The Cumberland County community came together to honor the late Larry V. Sherrill by funding a new Roane State Foundation scholarship for aspiring criminal justice students. In just 16 days, supporters raised more than $25,000—a record for a community-driven endowment at the college—through widespread donations, including a pivotal contribution from an anonymous couple. Sherrill, who passed away last year at age 58, dedicated his career to public service, including roles in the school system, local law enforcement, and 20 years as Cumberland County’s Circuit Court Clerk. Family and friends remembered him as a champion of justice, fairness, and second chances.

The effort was spearheaded by longtime friends Gerry and Hannah Cox, who shared their vision on social media after connecting with Roane State. A special reception on April 27 at the Cumberland County Campus recognized donors, with Sherrill’s wife Lea Ann, Roane State President Chris Whaley, and Foundation Executive Director Scott Niermann all speaking about his profound kindness and lasting impact. The endowment has now reached $28,000, with a new goal of $50,000 to support even more students. Contributions can be made at roanestate.edu/larryvsherrill.
