CUMBERLAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNING ABOUT IRS SCAM

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous reports from citizens throughout Cumberland County concerning IRS scams. Just as the IRS warns, the sheriff’s department also continues to warn all taxpayers against these fraudulent schemes as they are becoming more and more numerous. The taxpayer may be contacted by either phone, email or letter, with each attempting to obtain personal identification and/or financial information in hopes of scaring the taxpayer into making false tax payments to the criminal behind the scheme. We encourage everyone to use extra precaution when responding to these scams as your personal or financial information is vital in their fraudulent schemes. It should be noted that IRS will never attempt to contact you by email or phone and if you are contacted in any way and feel that it may be legitimate, you should contact IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040 before responding to anything you may have received. Further information concerning IRS scams may be obtained by visiting the IRS website at IRS.gov.
