DETAILS RELEASED OF HIGH-SPEED PURSUIT IN CROSSVILLE

The Crossville Police Department today released its report of a high-speed pursuit yesterday ending in a multi-vehicle crash on North Main Street.

It states officers were initially dispatched to the Bakery Outlet at the corner of North Main Street and Elmore for a stolen vehicle.

While responding, police learned the stolen 1998 GMC Jimmy, driven by 40-year-old Johnathan Wayde Russell of Crossville, was in the Highland Square Shopping Center parking lot.

That is where the pursuit started.

Russell led officers across Sparta Highway and into the National Guard Armory parking lot.

He went off the parking lot into a grassy area, drove around a flag pole, and back into the parking area.

Russell drove away from the armory and got on Sparta Highway eastbound.

The report indicates Russell disregarded the red light at Elmore and West Avenue and proceeded east toward North Main Street.

Russell would disregard the red light at Elmore and Main Street, resulting in a multi-vehicle crash. He entered the intersection and was hit on the passenger side by a 2005 GMC Canyon driven by Michael Welch. The impact sent the GMC on its side and slid into a blue 2023 Volkswagen operated by 68-year-old Jill Powers waiting at the intersection.

Powers was taken to Cumberland Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

Welch was not hurt.

The report states Russell was unconscious and appeared to have overdosed.

Officers administered Narcan to Russell. He quickly responded by waking up.

Both city and county law enforcement were involved in the pursuit.

Cumberland County Sheriff Casey Cox told 3B Media News today Russell was airlifted to an area trauma center for treatment of injuries. A landing zone was established at the recreational park on Industrial Boulevard where LifeForce landed. Russell was flown to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.

Russell was released from the hospital this morning and immediately taken into custody.

He was transported to the Cumberland County jail charged with reckless endangerment, theft of property, and felony evading arrest. His bond was initially set at a total of $24,000.
