ELDERLY MAN IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY SCAMMED OUT OF $444,000

Scammers continue to target the elderly in Cumberland County.

The first of many scams involving the victim started in August 2023.

A citizen in his early 80s in Fairfield Glade informed the sheriff’s office he received a call from a man identifying himself as Matthew Marsh, supposedly from the fraud department of Comcast.

Marsh told the victim a foreign third party hacked into his home network. The victim granted Marsh access into his computer. Marsh told him the firewall was inadequate and needed to be upgraded. The scammer told the victim the hardware and software would cost $5,000. Marsh told the victim it had to be paid by gift cards, which were purchased using an American Express card.

The victim was told later the upgrade was inadequate. The scammer requested $10,000 to fix the firewall. The victim was given a Bitcoin QR code from March to send the money to.

The scammer continued to contact the victim obtaining money by various methods and reasons.

The victim was told by Marsh he would be contacted by “Michael Ross” with another fraud department. Ross was able to scam the victim out of $243,463 at one point.

It stopped later when the victim was not able to send a final $15,000 requested by the scammer.

Officers say the victim lost $444,000 in the scams.
