FAIRFIELD MAN LOSES ALMOST $8,000 IN SCAM

On Friday last week, Dispatch advised Fairfield Police there was a subject that needed a phone call about a possible scam report. Sgt. Donnie Hammons contacted the complainant who said he believes he may be the victim of a scam. He said he received a call from a subject claiming to be with the Social Security Administration fraud department and he was told that he was the suspect in an interstate fraud and forgery
ring.

The caller told him his social security number was involved in over a million dollars in fraud. The caller told him he needed to take all his money out of his bank account and retirement accounts and send it to the caller to receive a new social security number. After the new social security number was given the money would be returned.

He agreed to take money out of his First National Bank account and send it to the caller, who told him not to tell anyone including his wife what he was doing. The caller had the victim keep him on the phone while he went to the bank and withdrew $7986 from his bank. The caller then had the victim go to the BitCoin atm at Good Times Wine and Spirits deposit the cash into the ATM and send the money to the caller-provided QR code.

The victim said the caller also wanted him to withdraw money from his IRA account, which is when the victim began to get suspicious and did not send any money from his IRA.

The victim then said he received a call from the Crossville Police Department with a subject claiming to be Officer Myers telling him he needed to send the money. Sgt. Hammons told the victim he was in fact being scammed and to not send any more money to the caller, or take any more calls or texts from the caller.

Hammons gave the victim information for ic3 and told him to make a report to it and to contact his bank and advise them to be on alert for charges that may come to his account.

The victim stated he put an alert on his credit cards and would be contacting his financial institutions.

Hammons then contacted Detective Fatima Pena about this case and she made contact with the victim concerning his case.

No suspects have been arrested and no charges have been made.
