FALL CREEK FALLS WORKERS PROTEST POSSIBLE PRIVATIZATION OF STATE PARK INN

Tennessee says that a state park inn is run down and needs to be upgraded, while its’ employees say that it’s doing okay without the state coming in. A group of protestors and workers at the Fall Creek Falls Inn made their voices heard on the subject Thursday. State Park Officials, including Gov. Bill Haslam, have been pushing for privatization of state parks for some time. Employees say that the privatization may not affect those tourists who just come for the day, but that it would indeed affect the cost for those that would spend the night. They also stated that they are fully capable of taking care of the inn if it were funded properly. Meanwhile, the Dept. of Environment and Conservation says that the Inn is only rented out 40 percent of the time, and that is barely enough to offset upkeep costs. Thursday, a group of potential partners toured the Inn and park. The state is looking for such partners to come in and run the business after $20 million, approved by lawmakers last year, will be used to rebuild the Inn. Protestors also said that the county schools would take a hit of three-years worth of motel-hotel tax revenue during the three years the Inn would by shutdown for rebuilding. They want to see more legislative hearings take place on the issue. Picture courtesy of Newschannel 5.
