FULL STORY – CUMBERLAND COUNTY DEPUTY SHOT, SUSPECT DECEASED

A Cumberland County deputy sheriff was flown to U.T. Medical Center by Lifestar after being shot tonight. The incident took place in the 8,000 block of Chestnut Hill Road just after 7 p.m. this evening after Deputy Tim Tutor responded to a suspicious person driving erratic. Tutor pulled the suspect over.

Sheriff Casey Cox told 105.7 News Deputy Tutor approached the suspect in the automobile, 57-year-old Mark Eberly, who was listed as homeless. Reportedly, as the deputy approached the driver’s window, Eberly opened the door and immediately shot and injured Tutor, who then fired his service weapon in response as Eberly drove from the scene a short distance then stopped.

Lifestar landed near city hall in Crab Orchard to take Deputy Tutor to Knoxville for treatment of a gunshot wound to the upper right side. Sheriff Cox said Tutor as of 11 p.m. is in stable condition and was talking with other officers and medics as he was being loaded into Lifestar.

While that was taking place, numerous law enforcement officers, including a SWAT team, surrounded the vehicle Eberly was in. He reportedly was slumped over the steering wheel. Officers requested several times for Eberly to tap his brakes to indicate he can hear them. That did not happened.

At 8:30 p.m. SWAT team members started their run  on Chestnut Hill Road toward the vehicle and fired tear gas containers into the car. The automobile filled up with gas and Eberly did not move.

Five minutes later, officers confirmed Eberly was deceased.

Sheriff Cox said Eberly is known to his officers. The last encounter deputies had with him was just 8 days ago when he was arrested for driving on a revoked license and resisting arrest.

Eberly is from Michigan.

Chestnut Hill Road was closed from Crab Orchard to Westchester Road during the incident.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called in to look into the shooting.

Lifestar awaits to transport Deputy Tutor to Knoxville for treatment of a gunshot wound
