BREAKING NEWS – CUMBERLAND COUNTY DEPUTY SHOT ON CHESNUT HILL ROAD

BREAKING NEWS – At this minute (7:55 p.m. central, Saturday, June 27, 2020) a Cumberland County deputy sheriff is about to be transported to U.T. Medical Center by Lifestar after being shot by an individual. Initial reports say the shooting took place in the 8,000 block of Chestnut Hill Road between 6:30 and 7 p.m. this evening after the deputy responded to a suspicious person call.

Lifestar is landing near city hall in Crab Orchard to take the deputy to Knoxville for a gunshot wound to the upper right side.

The identity of the officer will not be released at this time.

Numerous law enforcement officers, including a SWAT team, have the suspects vehicle surrounded and so far, the individual inside is not responding and is reportedly slumped over the steering wheel. Officers requested several times for the suspect to tap his brakes to indicate he can hear them. That has not happened so far.

Chestnut Hill Road is currently closed from Crab Orchard to Westchester Road.

At 8:30 p.m. SWAT team members started their run on Chestnut Hill Road toward the suspects vehicle and fired tear gas containers into the car. The vehicle filled up with gas and the suspect did not move.

At 8:35 p.m, the standoff was over. The suspect was deceased.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called in to look into the shooting.

This is a breaking news story and more information will be released at a later time.
