GATLINBURG DEATHS REMAIN AT 14: GOV. HASLAM COMMENTS ON EVACUATION QUESTIONS

The death count from the devastating fires which torched the Gatlinburg area and parts of Sevier County remains at 14 with 160 people injured. 1,785 structures have been damaged or destroyed. As of Tuesday night, several crews and pieces of equipment remain to battle the fires on Chimney Top 2. Officials say that the Gatlinburg cleanup is underway and that stores are scheduled to reopen Friday. Many are questioning the efficiency of the warning systems and how quickly the fires were assessed and then attacked. Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam said earlier this week that there will always be those who question the efforts, but in his sense, the evacuation procedures and inner-agency cooperation was outstanding. Also, there’s a new “Mountain Tough” website set-up to assist in the recovery following the massive fires. Sevier County. Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville have come together to launch mountaintough.org as the official website for the Smokey Mountain area recovery efforts. The website features lists of how to help or get help, like housing, counseling, and shelter information.
