Last week, the Green McAdoo Cultural Center and Museum in Clinton received a $100,000 grant from the state of Tennessee. Museum officials plan to use the funds to enhance the facility’s visibility. According to the Courier News, the grant money will be used to pay for a variety of promotional materials, and advertising that might include billboards along I-40.

The museum opened its doors in 2006, to mark the 50^th anniversary of Clinton High School’s desegregation. CHS was the first previously all-white Southern public school to admit black students after the Supreme Court’s 1956 Brown vs. Board of Education decision desegregating schools. The museum features 12 life-size bronze statues of the first black students to attend CHS.

Earlier this year, Green McAdoo Cultural Center was officially added to the U.S. Civil Rights Trail, a recently created entity that spotlights more than 100 sites across 14 states that challenged segregation throughout the 1950s and ‘60s.
