What was supposed to be a night of combat sports ended with an out-of-ring brawl and an arrest late Saturday night after a dispute between a spectator and an event announcer boiled over.

Officers with the Crossville Police Department were dispatched to Sparta Highway around 11:03 p.m. on July 18, 2026, following reports of a physical fight.

According to police reports, the conflict began after an event announcer made a comment over the intercom regarding a fighter’s forehead injury, allegedly boasting, “that’s what happens when you fight a Tennessee boy, you get cut.”

Ernesto Rodriguez, who was in attendance, took offense to the remarks and previous trash talk directed at his nephew, who was competing in the event. Rodriguez claimed that after confronting the announcer, he directed profanities and threats toward him.

Witnesses and security personnel, however, provided a different account of how the verbal dispute turned physical:

• Aggressive Approach: Security officers and the referee reported seeing Rodriguez walk swiftly toward the announcer after pointing him out to security.

• The Strike: Statements indicate Rodriguez threw a strike at the announcer. During the scuffle, a bystander attempted to step between the men and was accidentally struck on the lip.

• No Major Injuries: Responding officers noted no visible injuries on the announcer or bystander.
