HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — An image of a Sumner County man rescuing his paralyzed wife as their home went up in flames has earned him the nickname, “Superman.”
The Rockland Road house has been in Herman Hudson’s family for generations.  Herman Hudson and his wife are childhood sweethearts. Their families told FOX 17 News Herman’s wife gave him the option to leave when diagnosed with MS in her mid-20s.

But he’s been right by her side as her primary caretaker.  And decades later, he rushed into their burning house and carried her out to safety.  The Hendersonville man is living his wedding vows, deciding it’s not time for death to part him and his childhood sweetheart, running into their burning home Thursday to carry out his wife, who is paralyzed.

“The fireman told me, they couldn’t believe I was 58,” Herman said, “They said there is no way that I came out of that house with her…I would go in there again.”  On Friday, more are coming out to support the family, from friends, family, to complete strangers.  “I’m sorry y’all, I am not crying over materials, I am crying over all the love that everybody is showing me, I can’t leave to go anywhere without someone hugging me or handing me something,” Hudson said.

During Herman’s interview with FOX 17, strangers stopped by to bring donations.  “We don’t have to know each other we just got to show love to each other, that’s right,” Hudson said.
And, just days before Christmas, Hudson’s mother in law says they’re not losing any spirit.  “I’m 84 years old and I thank God I can still cook, so I am going to cook Christmas dinner for them, whatever they want me to fix for them,” Elizabeth Wallace said.  It’s something to look forward to for Hudson, whose now called “Superman” by many.
But he’s looking beyond the holiday season.  “Everybody is all, ‘too bad it’s around Christmas,’ this can happen before Christmas, anytime,” Hudson said. “When you worry, God can’t work with you, there’s no faith in worrying, he can’t come see you. The devil will, that’s why you see people on the news with their head down and saying ‘I’m devastated, I lost it all,’ cry to Jesus, don’t cry over toys and gifts.”

One day after the blaze, FOX 17 saw so many people stop by and the family says someone is even volunteering to rebuild their home.  Family members started a Go Fund Me account in an effort to help raise extra money so the family can get back on their feet. People can also donate to the Elizabeth Wallace fund at the Volunteer State Bank.
