HIGHLIGHTS FROM CUMBERLAND COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

The Cumberland County Board of Education met tonight (Thursday, September 28, 2023) for its monthly session.

Three students led the Pledge of Allegiance to start the meeting.

The board selected Teresa Boston to remain board chairman, Robert Safdie was voted vice-chairman, Rebecca Hamby will serve as parliamentarian, and Shannon Stout will be the TLN representative.

Members approved the acceptance of the Kid’s Club Grant for North Elementary. The board also granted participation in the state special education preschool grant.

Cumberland County High School was recognized by the school board for its collaborative efforts to send suicide prevention messaging throughout the school district. With 216 entries in the suicide prevention poster contest, CCHS has allowed students the opportunity to send a message that hope can change everything. Cumberland County High School has been awarded this honor for two consecutive years.

The school board received a report on the student count in Cumberland County schools. The report states a total of 6,993 students are enrolled.

There are 1,031 at Stone Memorial High School, 980 at Cumberland County High, and 77 at the Phoenix School.

For the elementary schools, Martin has the highest student population with 758, followed by Homestead with 718, Stone with 643, Brown with 574, Pleasant Hill with 561, South with 554, North with 516, Crab Orchard with 417, and Pine View with 164.
