HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE JUNE 2ND CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION

The Crossville City Council met for a work session last night to discuss a 15-item agenda in preparation for official voting at their upcoming meeting on June 9th. Led by Mayor R.J. Crawford, council members, and city staff, the session began with a presentation from the Cumberland Plateau Water Authority regarding next steps for local water management.

The council then evaluated an airport infrastructure matter involving a requested 10-year lease renewal by Grindstaff Aircraft Leasing, Inc. for an 8,000-square-foot hangar at $1,081.85 per month. Utility discussions continued with a proposed water line variance on Frost Road; staff and the Planning Commission recommend allowing a private service line instead of a costly mainline extension to service a single new home in an isolated “no man’s land” area.

Additionally, the council reviewed a recommended update to the Wastewater Facilities Plan by GRW for $60,000, scheduled for completion by March 2027.

Financial and administrative business made up a large portion of the agenda. The council reviewed a significantly increased fee schedule for cemetery burials to offset rising opening and closing costs, which covers traditional plots, cremains, child burials, and disinterments across weekday, weekend, and holiday rates. They also reviewed a FY 25/26 audit contract with Waycaster, CPA LLC, and the newly adopted Sports Authority budget, which requires formal city approval.

For city operations, Rogers Group, Inc. was recommended for both the delivered and picked-up asphalt bids for FY 26/27, while a letter from City Manager Valerie Hale requested that Leah Crockett be approved to serve in her capacity during any future temporary absences.

Community development, grants, and public events rounded out the work session. The council discussed the construction of the new Beaver Trail at Meadow Park Lake, a project recommended by the Leisure Services Committee that will be completed by the Friends of the Trails at no cost to the city. Law enforcement funding was addressed through a $19,000 Appalachia High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) grant, which requires no local match and will fund overtime for drug investigators.

The Planning Commission also submitted recommendations for two property annexations and their respective Plans of Service: one for Bob Tollett Loop and another for Lantana Road, the latter requiring a $5,000.98 bore fee before sewer access is granted.

Finally, the council reviewed a request from the Crossville Veterans’ Parade Committee to temporarily close streets on Saturday, November 7th, for the annual Veterans’ Day Parade route from CCHS to Crossville First Methodist Church.
