I-40 “WRONG-WAY DRIVER” CITED FOR VEHICULAR ASSAULT, DUI, AMONG OTHER CHARGES

The Tennessee Highway Patrol report on the multi-vehicle crash in Cumberland County which took place Monday night has finally been released. According to Troopers, the driver of a 2012 Ford F-250 was proceeding westbound on eastbound I-40 in the left hand lane when the driver of a 2004 Nissan Maxima swerved to avoid a collision. The Ford truck still struck the Nissan on the right rear which traveled into the median and stopped. As the F-250, driven by 47-year-old Steven L. Shults of Pittsboro, North Carolina, continued down the wrong direction of the interstate, it side-swiped a 2015 Dodge pickup pulling a trailer which jack-knifed also coming to rest in the median. As the Ford continued on, it struck a 2000 Toyota 4 Runner head-on. At the same time, a 2015 Freightliner tractor and 2015 Honda Accord, both traveling east, were struck by flying debris from the wreck. The driver of the Toyota, 22-year-old Courtney D. Howe of Knoxville was airlifted to UT Medical Center for treatment of unknown injuries. She was restrained. Shults was also flown to UT for treatment. His condition is unknown. Charges against Shults include vehicular assault, DUI, reckless endangerment by motor vehicle, possession of a handgun while under the influence, traveling the wrong direction on a one-way road, open container, and failure to wear seat belt.
