Johnthony Walker, who was convicted in the deadly 2016 bus crash in Chattanooga, was back in court this morning. His attorney had filed a motion for a reduction in Walker’s sentence.

Judge Don Poole denied the motion, saying anything less than four years in prison wouldn’t be sufficient.

The defense said one of the state’s witnesses had a criminal history of which they were unaware during the trial, because she was listed under another name. The witness was a mother of one of the children killed in the crash. The defense claimed if they’d known, they would have contested the witness’ credibility.

The judge contended the supposed criminal history would not have altered the sentence and said Walker’s speeding wasn’t the only factor he considered when determining his sentence.

Civil suits were filed on behalf of nearly three dozen families, citing pain and suffering, as well as seeking damages for medical bills. Several of those cases are still pending.

Walker’s bus, Bus #366, crashed into a utility pole and overturned November 21, 2016, while carrying 37 students home from Wooodmore Elementary School. D’Myunn Brown, Zyaira Mateen, Keonte Wilson, Cordayja Jones, Zoie Nash and Zyanna Harris, ranging in age from six to 10, died. Several other children were injured.

Walker remains free on bond, pending an appeal.
