K-9 "SNIFFER" DEMONSTRATES FOR CUMBERLAND COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD

The Cumberland County Board of Education got a demonstration of a K-9 “sniffer” Thursday night. Representatives from Interquest Detection Canines brought in a canine used in the detection of drugs, guns, or other such illegal property that would be brought on school grounds. The demonstration consisted of the dog sniffing out a loaded handgun clip from six different school backpacks. The company, which is based out of Houston, Texas, provides such dogs to schools, grades 6-12th, on a monthly basis. The dogs are used as a “deterrent” to illegal activity and have worked for several school systems, including schools in Roane, Morgan, Fentress and White Counties. The company does not get involved with arrests, and any searches conducted include school administrators. The board will look at the possibility of signing a contract with the company in the future.
