Yesterday, veterans and dignitaries turned out for the dedication of the Korean War Memorial across from the old Cumberland County courthouse. County Mayor Allen Foster thanked all the veterans present that fought in the Korean War, as well as all other veterans, for their service.

“I am very thankful for this memorial. It helps to commemorate the sacrifices for freedom that were made by women and men who served in the Korean War,” said Foster.

The memorial commemorates the sacrifices of not only the Cumberland County veterans but the 5.8 million Americans who served in the U.S. armed services during the three-year period of the Korean War. The war was one of the most hard fought in U.S. history. From June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953, 135,707 Americans died in hostile actions in the Korean War. Of these, 8,200 are listed as missing in action, lost or buried at sea. In addition, 103,284 were wounded during the conflict.
