Lightning deaths are at a 10-year high in Tennessee and account for 25 percent of deadly lightning strikes nationwide.

The latest victim was 40-year-old Darrell Hoskins from western Tennessee. He had earbuds on listening to music while doing yard work when a lightning bolt hit a nearby tree and struck him in the back of the head.

In addition to Hoskins, two other Tennesseans have died from lightning strikes in the past two months

In May, a 7-year-old Northwest Tennessee boy was killed when lightning struck a tree he was playing under.

Earlier this month, Everett Massengill of Roane County lost his life to a lightning strike right after mowing a yard.

If you are planning any outside activities, be sure to check the weather forecast to see if there is a chance of storms. Also, if you are outside and hear thunder in the distance or see a storm approaching, take shelter.

The last year on record for which multiple lightning deaths were reported in Tennessee was 2006.
