MAN BLAMES DRUNK DRIVING ON PETTING HIS DOG

On Friday last week at around 8:42 p.m., Officer Chrystal Massey observed a black Chevrolet Corvette traveling eastbound on Highway 70 that had traveled completely over the solid yellow line into the other traveling before topping a hillcrest. Officer Massey caught up to the vehicle where she observed the vehicle swerving in the travel lane and then again over the solid yellow line into the opposite lane of travel.

A few hundred yards away, she observed a County Deputy in a traffic stop on the westbound side of traffic where the vehicle was traveling over the travel Lane. The vehicle immediately made a turn into the Sunoco parking lot where Officer Massey initiated a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Charles White, and upon contact, White stated he was simply petting his dog.

He was asked if he had been drinking and said no, and then immediately mentioned his dog again. Officer Massey observed that his eyes were red and watery with an alcoholic odor coming from the vehicle. She asked white to step out of the vehicle, however, he said he didn’t want to and asked if he had to.

Massey asked to search him and located a buprenorphine prescription bottle belonging to him.

Buprenorphine is a synthetic opioid developed in the late 1960s and is used to treat pain and opioid use disorders.

White then stated he had consumed two alcoholic beverages.

Massey then attempted to conduct sobriety tests on White, however, he failed each test. Officer Massey read implied consent at the time of the investigation and White was deemed to be under the influence of mind-altering substances and could not safely operate a vehicle. White was arrested for driving under the influence and transported to the Cumberland County Justice Center.
