MAN CONTINUES QUEST TO GET DANGEROUS GUARD RAILS OFF INTERSTATES

An East Tennessee father is taking his message of dangerous guard rails in Tennessee all the way to the White House. Over a year ago, Steve Elmers lost his 17-year-old daughter, Hannah Elmers, in a vehicle accident in McMinn County. Officers say she hit an X-lite guard rail that pierced her vehicle impaling her causing instant death. By the time of the crash, the Tennessee Department of Transportation removed the X-lite rails from its approved product list because of performance concerns, but several were still on Tennessee roads. Another traffic death contributed to the guard rail was noted in Cumberland County. After research, Steve Elmers found other families who had been devastated by this same product all over the country. Elmers wants to let President Donald Trump know about the dangers of the X-lite guard rails when Trump comes to Nashville soon to speak to the American Farm Bureau Federation. Elmers has requested Congresswoman Diane Black to bring up the subject to Trump when he visits Tennessee. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, all X-lite guard rails will be removed from any roads where the speed limit is higher than 45 MPH. As of now, I-40 is free of those rails. TDOT says they have until June of this year to replace all of the X-lite guard rails.
