MAN DIES IN KAYAK ACCIDENT IN RHEA COUNTY

The Rhea County Sheriff’s Department and TWRA responded to a report of a flipped kayak yesterday afternoon on Richland Creek near Back Valley Road. Fast-moving water and rough terrain made recovery efforts difficult. Officers say 31-year-old Andrew Gamble of Hamilton County and two other kayakers took to the water for a point to point trip along the section of the stream known for white water paddling after heavy rains. While kayaking, Gamble went underwater after being trapped under a log. Those with him attempted to help free Gamble but he passed away. The Rhea County Sheriff’s Office, TWRA, Rhea County Emergency Management Agency and Tennessee State Parks worked together for recovery efforts.
