MAN IS CHARGED WITH CHILD ABUSE AND BEING AWOL FROM THE MILITARY
A Cumberland County man has been charged with child abuse along with being AWOL from the military. Deputies were called to a Clearview Lane Apartment to perform a welfare check on four children. One of the children told officers that he was “almost scared to death.” He said that he had been spanked hard for jumping on a bed, and another child had said they received a red mark on their face because a box was thrown at them. Some of the other children exhibited bruising on their body. When asked, 22-year-old Tyler Alexander Benton reportedly told deputies that he did not know how the marks got on the children. Benton was charged with two counts of child abuse. He was also served outstanding warrants for being AWOL and theft from the Army National Guard.
