MAN REFUSES TO BUDGE FOR CUMBERLAND COUNTY DEPUTY

Yesterday at approximately 9:31 p.m., Corporal Brandon Griffin was patrolling the area of Genesis Road when he observed a black GMC Yukon stop halfway in the roadway/shoulder beside a male subject walking and then continued to follow the male as he was walking toward Rumors Bar.
Griffin then got behind the Yukon, which then pulled away from the male, and pulled into a parking lot just before Rumor’s Bar. The male subject turned his head toward Griffin and made a motion to follow him. While following, Griffin opened his door and said “hey” to the male, who then stopped.
Griffin asked him to come back to his car so I could speak to him. However, the male asked if he was being detained, and after learning he was, he became belligerent and wouldn’t comply with commands.
Again, he told Griffin to follow him to Rumors Bar. When the deputy asked the male to step back to the patrol car, he replied, “I don’t think so”.
Deputy Griffin explained the situation, and he was being investigated and the male yelled back ” Excuse Me”.
The male had multiple wooden/plastic sticks on him, one falling off his shoulder. The male reached down to pick it up and Griffin advised him not to pick the weapon up, to which he again yelled: ” Excuse Me”.
The male reached for it, and Griffin kicked it away, observing the ‘stick’ to apparently be a wooden broom handle, and reasoned it to be a potential weapon.
The male then became irate/screaming “Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, you need to backup man, no, no, no, hey somebody come and help me, somebody come and help me, no, no, no” as he began walking away from Griffin.
The deputy told the male to come closer, with the male said “I don’t think so”, increasing the distance. He then began entering the Rumors parking lot, which is when Griffin grabbed the male by his arm.
Griffin then told the male to get on the ground, and after refusing Griffin took him to the ground by using a leg sweep. Once on the ground, the deputy told the male to roll over and advised him he was under arrest. When he refused, Griffin administered a knee strike to the right side of his back.
The male continued pushing back and refused to be placed in custody. Another knee strike to his right side was applied to attempt to gain compliance, then the deputy was able to roll the male on his stomach while giving commands for him to place his hands behind his back. However, the male continued to refuse.
Griffin then was able to drag his arm out from under his body and safely place him in custody.
The male was identified as Christopher Steward.
After County and City Police Units arrived on the scene to assist, a search of Christopher’s person found CBD products and a glass pipe. Sgt. Ray Seiber transported Steward to intake for processing. While en route, Steward advised Sgt. Seiber, he found a pistol on the ground and was taking it to Rumors Bar to turn it in.
A search of Steward’s belongings by Deputy Ethan Wilson turned up a Diamondback DB9 .9MM pistol. The pistol, not reported stolen, was logged into evidence for safekeeping until the owner is located so it can be returned.
Due to his irate behavior, Steward was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Stop, Halt, and Frisk.
