MARYVILLE COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER IN FATAL WRECK

Students, faculty and staff of Maryville College are mourning the passing of a womens’ basketball player that had a promising up-and-coming career. 21-year-old Brittany Johnson was killed in an automobile wreck around 4:30 AM Monday morning. The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports that Johnson was traveling south on Interstate 75 near mile marker 30 when she ran off the side of the road, plunging over the shoulder and into the grass. Her car hit a chain link fence then struck several trees before coming to rest in the eastbound lane of Hooper Gap Rd. Johnson was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. THP says the woman was not restrained and that it may have saved her life. The cause of the crash is still under investigation with drug and alcohol tests still pending. She was a starter for the basketball team and majored in physical education.
