MILO LEMERT STATUE APPROVED FOR RELOCATION ON MAIN STREET IN CROSSVILLE

According to a report by the Crossville Chronicle, Cumberland County’s building and grounds committee has approved a request from Crossville’s American Legion Post 163 to relocate a statue of World War I hero and Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Milo Lemert to a more prominent location in front of the gazebo on Main Street, adjacent to the Military Memorial Museum of the Upper Cumberland and next to the Crossville-Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce building.

Dennis Flynn of the American Legion explained that this site would better highlight the statue compared to its previously approved placement in the county’s Veterans Memorial Park, and proposed naming the area the Milo Lemert Medal of Honor Memorial Park to allow for future displays while also enabling cleanup and painting of the gazebo.

The statue, ordered from E.S. Schubert Sculpture Studios in Kansas City, Kansas using U.S.-made materials, was funded entirely through donations to the American Legion. County Mayor Allen Foster agreed to coordinate with the maintenance department on the gazebo and statue placement, and the committee unanimously approved the motion put forward by 1st District Commissioner Sue York and supported by 2nd District Commissioner Nancy Hyder.

The request will go before the full county commission for final consideration at its December 15 meeting.
