MONTEREY MAN ARRESTED AFTER ENGAGING DEPUTIES IN PURSUIT

Sunday afternoon, while patrolling along Highway 70 North, a Cumberland County deputy saw the driver of a car with a broken windshield turn off the highway without using a turn signal. The deputy activated his lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop. The driver sped up, refusing to yield for about three miles before turning in at a driveway on Junior Camp Road.

According to an affidavit, when an officer attempted to handcuff 45-year-old Savage Lee Stamps, the man “spun around and squared up into a fighting stance.”

An officer used his Taser on Stamps and took him into custody without further incident.

The arrest report indicates Stamps told deputies he didn’t stop “because a family member had recently committed suicide.”

Stamps’ license had been revoked for a DUI on 6/21/2006, and the vehicle had a switched license plate.

Stamps was arrested for felony evading arrest, resisting arrest and driving on a revoked license. He was placed under $4,000 bond and is due in court April 15.
