MORE RAIN MAKING ROAD SITUATION ON HIGHWAY 68 WORSE

Officials say rainfall today worsened the situation with a section of Highway 68 on the mountain between Grandview and Spring City. Part of the road broke away and slid down the mountain Tuesday from persistent rainfall, leading officials to close the highway. TDOT estimates 3,600 motorists use that stretch of road daily. According to Jennifer Flynn, regional communications coordinator for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the highway is not stable at this time as it continues to shift. Flynn said they are working on a repair plan but don’t have it in place yet. With the roadway and surrounding soil still unstable, TDOT engineers are unable to conduct a thorough study of the site and create a plan of action at this time. Officials say the highway will be closed for weeks in this area. Motorists are encouraged to use Interstate 40 and Highway 27 as an alternate route. The following measures are in place for the Grandview community during this time: a Rhea County deputy will be stationed in Grandview 24/7 for calls, Cumberland County EMS will assist in medical calls in Grandview, there is a Rhea County fire station on top of Grandview but Cumberland County fire and the Cumberland County Rescue Squad will provide support if needed; and if a medical helicopter is needed, there is a landing site established now in Grandview.
