MULTI-VEHICLE ACCIDENTS ON I-40 LOCKS UP TRAFFIC

Two accidents on I-40 in Roane County late yesterday locked up traffic for a while.

The first took place at the 352 eastbound mile marker when a 2011 Peterbilt tractor-trailer operated by 58-year-old Ernesto Fuentes of Miami Gardens, Florida left the road and struck a cable barrier coming to rest in the median. Fuentes, who was restrained and not hurt, told troopers the left front tire blew out causing the accident.

Around 90 minutes later, a four vehicle crash took place two miles away at the 350 mile marker.

The crash report states a 1998 Kenworth tractor-trailer operated by 56-year-old James Edward Groves of Franklin, Kentucky, a 2013 Ford F-150 driven by 58-year-old Mark Scott Adams of Montgomery, Texas, a 2016 Nissan Rogue operated by 58-year-old Tammy Renee Norman of Wartburg, and a 2007 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by 50-year-old Sunar Kumar of Burlington, New Jersey were all heading east and collided after coming up on traffic slowing for the accident remaining at the 352 mile marker. All drivers were restrained and the only injury was to Norman. Groves was charged with failure to exercise due care.
