MULTI-VEHICLE CRASH SHUTS DOWN I-40 EASTBOUND ON ROCKWOOD MOUNTAIN LATE MONDAY NIGHT
A multi-vehicle wreck completely shut down eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 on Rockwood Mountain late Monday night, triggering a swift response from emergency crews and disrupting traffic for about an hour.
The accident occurred around 10:00 p.m. near the 343-mile marker. Multiple vehicles became tangled in the crash, including what authorities believe was a U-Haul truck towing a trailer.
The West Roane County Fire Department and the Roane County Rescue Squad rushed to the scene to assist. Fortunately, officials confirmed that no motorists were trapped in the wreckage and, remarkably, no injuries were reported.
Investigating troopers note that weather and road conditions likely played a role in the pileup. A recent rain shower had left the pavement wet, and the crash resulted in a significant oil spill across the highway.
To combat the slick conditions, Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) crews were called in to spread sand over the roadway to restore traction.
While emergency crews cleared the debris and treated the oil spill, eastbound I-40 traffic was temporarily diverted through the city of Rockwood.
Thanks to the rapid response of clean-up crews, all eastbound lanes were safely reopened to traffic by approximately 11:00 p.m. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
