NATE TO BRING WINDS AND HEAVY RAINS TO AREA

Nate will either be a minimal tropical storm or a strong tropical depression as it enters the listening area this afternoon and tonight (Sunday, October 8, 2017). As of 8 a.m. central this morning, much of the area already received light to moderate rainfall from the outskirts of the storm and the rain will intensify as the day progresses. The following can be expected:

ROADS – The area has not seen rain in nearly two weeks until today. That means oil residue combines with leaves falling on the roads will make the roads slick in many places. As Nate gets closer the winds will increase as well as the rainfall. As of now, 3 to 5 inches of rain is projected with possible higher amounts. This will result in flooding in areas as well as ponding of water on roads. If you have to travel today, use extra caution and allow extra time in getting to your destination.

WINDS – A wind advisory will go into effect starting at 4 pm central today and is set to expire at 10 p.m. tonight. A wind advisory means that winds over 40 mph are expected. Winds this strong may blow down a few trees or tree limbs and cause isolated power outages. The area was already experiencing power outages as of 7 a.m. this morning. Power crews, including Volunteer Electric, are standing by and ready to respond to outages.

RAINFALL – Anywhere from 3 to 5 inches on the plateau and higher amounts as you head east into the Tennessee valley. This storm is a fast-moving storm so rain will be light one minute and a downfall the next.

SEVERE WEATHER – There is a slight possibility of a tornado as the center of Nate gets into the area but other than that, the main risk will be heavy rainfall, flooding and high winds.
