NEW YMCA FACILITY TAKES SHAPE IN CROSSVILLE

Construction is progressing on the new Crossville Family YMCA, with leaders offering an inside look at the upcoming facility designed to serve as a central gathering place for the community.

Mandi Perhaey, CEO of the Putnam and Crossville Family YMCAs, and Kevin Chamberlain, project architect with Upland Design Group, provided a virtual tour highlighting the building’s key features. Upon entering through the welcoming community hall, visitors will find direct access to a natatorium featuring a full-size six-lane competition pool alongside a smaller instructional area. Spectator seating will allow parents to watch swim meets, lessons, and training sessions.

The gymnasium will include a full-size basketball court that can be divided into two smaller courts, supporting basketball, pickleball, and volleyball. A second-story walking track will encircle the gym and fitness areas, offering views of activity below and the outdoors. A lower-level multi-athletic court (MAC) gym with synthetic flooring will host additional sports such as futsal, indoor soccer, and more court games, enabling multiple activities to run simultaneously.

Additional amenities include a large group exercise room for cycling, strength training, cardio, and both in-person and virtual classes via the YMCA 360 app. The upper-level wellness center, open to ages 10 and up, will feature weight and cardio equipment integrated with the walking track. Locker rooms (male, female, and family) are positioned to separate wet and dry areas efficiently.

A standout family-friendly feature is the Y Play gym care program, allowing parents with a family membership to leave children (for up to two hours per day, 14 hours per week at no extra cost) in a supervised space with arts, crafts, and activities while they work out.

Design touches emphasize community connection, including large windows and patios overlooking Main Street and a great lawn for outdoor yoga and events. Local Crab Orchard stone is incorporated into the architecture, highlighting regional materials. Natural daylighting was prioritized for both environmental benefits and a warmer atmosphere.

Community response has been enthusiastic. Residents, including many newcomers and retirees to Cumberland County, are looking forward to expanded options for youth sports, swim lessons, after-school care, day camps, and a year-round indoor gathering spot — particularly welcome during winter months. Local teenagers have already inquired about job opportunities, and parents are eager for the childcare and programming.

Leaders noted strong community engagement throughout the planning process, including meetings with city officials, to ensure the facility meets local needs and gains broad support.

The project is positioned as a major new resource for fitness, recreation, and social connection in Crossville.
