NEWS FROM CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL MEETING – FEBRUARY 11, 2020

The Crossville City Council met for their regular monthly session last night (Tuesday, February 11, 2020). Here are the highlights from the meeting:

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH RECOGNIZED

The city council recognized the January and February 2020 Student of the Month at Martin Elementary School at the meeting:

Addison Wyatt is the January 2020 Student of the Month. Her teacher says Addison is always honest, kind, and helpful.

Parker Woolbright is the February 2020 Student of the Month. “When I think of respect, I think of Parker Woolbright. Parker not only shows respect to adults but also to his peers. He seems to always be looking for the best in others. When speaking with other students, he is very patient and kind. He shows others that he cares about them by treating them with courtesy. His actions are a great example of how to show respect,” said Parker’s teacher.

MAYOR PROCLAIMS FEBRUARY 25, 2020 SPAY DAY IN CROSSVILLE

Crossville Mayor James Mayberry approved a proclamation regarding Spay Day in Crossville. The proclamation is as follows:

WHEREAS, over 2,000 unwanted dogs and cats entered our Cumberland County/City of Crossville Animal Shelter last year, many due to unplanned litters; and

WHEREAS, spaying and neutering have been shown to dramatically reduce the number of animals who enter shelters, helping to reduce it locally by about 60% since 2003; and

WHEREAS, there are local Crossville programs to assist with spaying or neutering pets living in poverty and free roaming cats; and

WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the City of Crossville to promote spay/neuter by hereby proclaiming that February 25, 2020 is designated “Spay Day Crossville” in support of “World Spay Day 2020” and to call upon the people of the City of Crossville to observe this day by making arrangements to have their own pets spayed or neutered or by sponsoring the spay/neuter of a pet living in poverty.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, James S. Mayberry, Mayor of the City of Crossville, Tennessee, do hereby proclaim February 25, 2020 as SPAY DAY-Crossville 2020 in Crossville, Tennessee and call upon the people of Crossville to observe the day by committing to having their own pets spayed or neutered or by sponsoring the spaying or neutering of a pet in need.

APPROVAL TO SUBMIT APPLICATION FOR FUNDING OF 2020 CDBG PROJECT

The city council approved the application with appropriate assurances to the State of Tennessee, Department of Economic and Community Development, Office of Program Management, requesting Fiscal Year 2020 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds in the amount not to exceed $600,000, plus any eligible Three-Star bonus allowance, for a sewer system improvements project. The City of Crossville will be responsible for the local match to be provided in full by the water/sewer account.

APPROVAL TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO WEST CUMBERLAND UTILITY DISTRICT

The city council approved an agreement with West Cumberland Utility District. In the event that West Cumberland Utility District requires assistance with an emergency water leak repair, West Cumberland Utility District agrees to pay the City of Crossville for any expenses accrued during an emergency leak repair, such as, but not limited to employee wages, equipment use, materials, etc.

FEASIBILITY STUDY GRANTES FOR INDOOR RECREATIONAL FACILITY

The Crossville City Council granted a proposal for a feasibility study for an indoor recreation facility. HFR Designs out of Brentwood, Tennessee will conduct the study. It will include an architectural program to show features and amenities that could be included in an indoor recreation facility but would not include a building footprint nor site evaluation. The total cost of the study is $30,900.

CITY MANAGER REPORT

Sales tax collections in Crossville last month was the highest recorded for a January since fiscal year 2012/2013. That is according to the city manager’s report reviewed by the Crossville City Council. The city took in $698,096. In wholesale beer tax for last month, the city collected $51,283. In liquor taxes, the city saw around $52,000. In hotel occupancy taxes, the city collected $10,499.

CROSSVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT

The Crossville Police Department released their latest month report (January 2020) reviewed by the city council. It states officers made 177 arrests in January, took 4 juveniles into custody and wrote 95 citations. Of the arrests, 27 were shoplifters followed by drug violations, public intoxication, criminal trespassing and vehicle thefts. Officers also responded to 99 accidents. Of those vehicle crashes, 10 involved injuries, 17 without injuries and 72 accidents were minor.
