VIRTUAL ENROLLMENT FIGURES ON THE DECLINE IN SCHOOL SYSTEM
Cumberland County Director of Schools Dr. Ina Maxwell says enrollment numbers in virtual learning is on the decline. As of yesterday (Wednesday, February 11, 2021), a total of 320 remain. Of that number, 196 are elementary students and 124 are high school.
“We have more and more parents calling and asking if their student can return to the classroom. The answer is simply yes,” said Dr. Maxwell.
“Our teachers and staff went above and beyond during the height of the pandemic to give their best for each and every student.”
The number is dropping mainly in part to active cases of COVID-19 going down in the county.
BARNES IS NEW ACADEMIC OFFICER FOR SCHOOL SYSTEM
The Cumberland County School System announces Stephanie Barnes is the new academic officer at central office. She is the former principal of the Phoenix School. Mitch Lowe has been selected as her successor there. Barnes is in her 27th year as an educator serving in former roles including a teacher and an assistant principal.
RETREAT PLANNED FOR BOARD OF EDUCATION
The Cumberland County Board of Education will participate in a retreat via Zoom the final two Saturdays in this month. It will include a presentation from departments in the system as well as updates on COVID-19 and the effects of the virus in schools and the education process. The final day of the session will include a scheduled legislative update on education issues from Senator Paul Bailey and Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton.
