An East Tennessee family will be spending the next few months in the NICU at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital as Baby Broc Selby fights for his life. Brittany Brun’s water broke at 25 weeks, on January 16th. Her original due date was in April. She says Broc is a micro-preemie baby and was born weighing less than a pound.

“I ended up having him at 25 weeks and 2 days. You’re supposed to go 40 weeks, I didn’t go 40 weeks,” said Brun.

Broc’s father, Dexter Selby, says without the support of their family and the community, they wouldn’t be so positive. They say doctors told them Broc could be in the NICU until at least April.

At only 6 days old, he will have already received four blood transfusions. That, Brun says, is why the community’s support of blood drives is so meaningful.

“It’s just something for the babies, it’s been an eye-opener,” said Brun, “Even if you’re not a match, it still helps all the other babies in here.”

Selby’s mother is an Oak Ridge police officer and rallied law enforcement in the area to donate blood in Broc’s name. The Crossville couple says they’ve been blown away by support from around East Tennessee.

Broc is O+, according to the family, the blood type is rare and they hope with more people donating blood, there’s a higher chance of finding a match with their son and others in the NICU.

MEDIC Mobile Blood Bus will be at the Oak Ridge Civic Center located at 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.
