NORFOLK SOUTHERN RESUMES NORMAL OPERATIONS

Normal freight operations have resumed along Norfolk Southern’s busiest main line in southeast Tennessee following a train derailment last Thursday afternoon near Lancing. While trains are moving again, they are currently restricted to speeds of 15 miles per hour near the crash site, where 18 to 20 cars derailed and sparked tank car fires. Due to the presence of ethanol and resulting fires, nearby residents were initially evacuated, though emergency officials have since cleared them to return home after determining there is no immediate public threat. No injuries have been reported from the incident.

However, environmental concerns persist, leading the National Park Service to temporarily close Rock Creek Campground after elevated ethanol concentrations were detected in the upstream water and air. There is currently no timeline for reopening the campground, which will remain closed until cleanup operations are finished and the area is fully evaluated. The response effort has been complicated by the derailment’s remote location and limited road access, requiring a coordinated response from Norfolk Southern crews, local first responders, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. State environmental teams have deployed air-monitoring units to assess the area, and Norfolk Southern is continuing recovery efforts while investigators work to determine the cause of the derailment.
