OAK RIDGE TO ATTEMPT WORLD RECORD FOR ‘KNOCKOUT’ BASKETBALL

As part of this weekend’s Secret City Festival, the city of Oak Ridge will try to set a Guinness World Record – in a ‘knockout’ basketball game.

In 2015, the Dallas Mavericks set the record for the largest knockout basketball game with 701 people participating. According to Guinness World Records, the 27-round game lasted more than three hours.

Secret City Festival organizers are hoping to gather at least 702 shooters on Saturday. As a special incentive, the first 702 shooters to show up will get a commemorative T-shirt. All players must be there by noon. They hope to attract everyone from elementary-school kids to octogenarians for the event.

“Come and participate on June 9 and help Oak Ridge shatter that record!” urged Secret City Festival organizers. “Since the Manhattan Project during World War II, Oak Ridge has been known as a technology giant, but ‘knockout’ allows the city to highlight a rich athletic history as well.”

According to the rules of knockout basketball, two players line up behind a set shooting point.

“Two players at a time each take a ball and try to shoot a free throw. If the player misses, they must grab the rebound and score as fast as possible. When one player successfully scores, the other is out, and the ball goes to the next person until there is only one person left standing,” Guinness World Records explained.

A veterans’ parade starting at 10 a.m. Saturday is slated to end just in time for the parade participants to play alongside spectators in the crowd.
