PARENTS FACE CUMBERLAND COUNTY COURT AFTER TODDLER ALMOST WANDERS INTO INTERSTATE TRAFFIC

Kaylin Monee Brundge is set to appear in Cumberland County Court tomorrow for child endangerment and drug paraphenalia charges from March. According to the affidavit of complaint filed by Trooper Nicholas Neal, on March 21, 2026, the trooper responded to a dispatch regarding a small child in the roadway on Interstate 40 westbound near the 325-mile marker. Upon arrival, he observed several men holding down an adult male, while Brundge was holding her young son and shouting at the men to release the male.

The subsequent investigation revealed that Brundge and the child’s father, Newton Alexander Smith, had fallen asleep inside a commercial box truck parked on the interstate shoulder. While they were asleep, the unsupervised toddler managed to escape from his car seat and climb out of the truck’s cab without either parent’s knowledge.

Multiple motorists spotted the child wandering in the far-right lane of the active highway, and a female driver managed to rescue him from the roadway before he could be struck by traffic. Both parents remained entirely unaware that the child was missing or in danger until after the rescue took place.

Following the arrest of both subjects, a search and inventory of the vehicle uncovered various items of drug paraphernalia belonging to Brundge, including a rolling tin with rolling papers and marijuana residue on the dashboard, a THC vape pen on the driver’s seat, an empty pre-roll container with marijuana residue inside a jacket, and a digital scale inside a suitcase in the back of the truck.
